SPACE DECELERATOR

In 2006 we developed an installation as an interactive performance on public space. The formal composition embodies a sight cone inviting pedestrians to sit down. Looked at from the outside, it plays with the different effects of surface and volume. The inside of the space decelerator offers two different perspectives. This reduction allows the deceleration of the otherwise dynamic-diffuse effect of the urban exterior, being supported as well by the contemplator’s protected situation. As a result of this decelerated space, the perception of the city’s public space and of otherwise overlooked details is enhanced. This architectonic perception vehicle proposes to enable in a tangible and concentrated way the perception of the heterogeneous cityscape and of Berlin’s increasingly fast-paced transformation processes in a site-specific context.

A prototype of the space decelerator was displayed in 2006 at the exhibition "Designcity" which was organised by Designmai Berlin in the Altes Postfuhramt am Gleisdreieck, as well as at the Urban Age event in the Postbahnhof Berlin premises. At the same time it served as a showcase for the Gartenstadt Atlantic project.
